Why Midwest FC?

Why is TKO Crew Juniors affiliating with Midwest United FC to

become Midwest United FC- Kalamazoo?

TKO Crew Juniors has been affiliated with MLS team Columbus Crew for over two years. While that relationship proved beneficial to our Club to some extent, changes within the Columbus Crew organization were underway (including all new logos and re-branding) that would have resulted in significant expenses for our Club. As a non-profit organization, we could not have easily absorbed those costs. This reality prompted us to reevaluate our affiliation with the Columbus Crew and explore other options to determine what direction would be most effective for our Club and our players.

While we were engaged in that evaluation process, Grand Rapids Crew Juniors approached us about joining them as they ended their affiliation with the Crew and ventured out to create a new club— Midwest United FC. As we considered the need for building and improving upon our existing club in a sound and sustainable way, it became clear that affiliating with Midwest United FC was the right decision and the right direction for TKO. Essentially, the affiliation allows us to share resources, as well as a common vision, with a like-minded, non-profit Club in our region.

The affiliation affords our Club new opportunities for player development and coaching education. As Neil Ridgway said in a recent mlive article, “We have a really good synergy and the ability to share and bounce ideas off each other gives us a better opportunity for player development.” Additionally, the affiliation allows us to benefit from the Midwest United FC management staff in place in Grand Rapids and to receive needed administrative assistance.
